|Franklin (Frank) P. Gibbs, 88, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away in Springfield, MO, on February 18, 2014 after a full and blessed life.
Frank was born July 17, 1925 in Oakland, CA to Frank and Mabel Gibbs. He was a graduate of Castlemont High School and San Francisco Junior College. During WWII, he was a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. After WWII he attended the University of California Berkeley Hastings Law School. On February 7, 1947, he married love of his life, Jeannette (Jan) Rysdorp, in Berkeley, CA and later moved to South Dakota to attend the University of South Dakota School of Law. Upon graduation, Frank practiced law in Minnehaha County for over 50 years, serving three years as Assistant State's Attorney and four years as State's Attorney. He also served six years as a state Representative and four years as a state Senator, concluding his tenure as chairman of the South Dakota Legislative Research Council. Frank spent the last 18 years of his career as a part-time federal magistrate judge. He was active in the community, filling support and leadership roles in various organizations including Volunteers of America, Augustana College Center for Western Studies, Hi-Y, DeMolay, Boy Scouts, The Westerners, and the First Reformed Church. He enjoyed athletics, playing softball until 50, racquetball until 65, and dancing into his 80ís, and collecting western art. During his retirement years, Frank and Jan traveled the US and Canada visiting family and friends and enjoyed art galleries along the way. The Gibbs family gladly opened their home to friends, including 7 foreign exchange students, numerous missionaries, artists, dignitaries, and those in need.
Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Jan, his parents, and one grandson. He is survived by his brother, Robert Gibbs; 4 children, Jeff Gibbs, Andrea Hernandez, Patricia Knox, and Barbara Gifford; nine grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Reformed Church, Sioux Falls, SD. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Augustana College Center of Western Studies (Sioux Falls, SD) or Inspiration Hills Camp & Conference Center (Inwood, IA).
