|Jane Ru Chen, 78, of Sioux Falls (formerly of Brookings) passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at the Sanford Hospice Cottage.
Jane Ru Po was born to Ping-wen Po and Ching-Yin Sung on May 26, 1935 in China. She attended elementary school in Chungqin, China. Jane moved with her family to Hong Kong in 1947 where she received her high school education. In 1954, she went to Taiwan to pursue her college education at the National Taiwan University where she received her B.S. degree in Agronomy in 1958. Following her graduation, she taught in the Botany Department at NTU. While attending NTU, she met her husband Chen Ho Chen. They were engaged before Chen Ho left for Louisiana State University in 1958 to begin graduate studies. In 1959, Jane arrived at South Dakota State University, working as a graduate research assistant in the Agronomy Department. Chen Ho joined her a year later, and they were married on July 22, 1960 in Lake Benton, MN.
At SDSU, Jane performed research in the Cytology Lab after earning her M.S. degree. The couple then moved to Downers Grove, IL and later to Hong Kong. They returned to Brookings in 1968 when Chen Ho joined the faculty in the Biology Department at SDSU. After raising three daughters, she and Chen Ho moved to Sioux Falls in 1999 upon his retirement to be near grandchildren
Jane had the opportunity to follow many of her grandchildren’s activities such as gymnastics, dance, piano, soccer, basketball, baseball, drum line, orchestra, and band. Before she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, she was able to follow the Lincoln High School Marching Band to the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena. Jane also enjoyed cultivating and caring for a variety of houseplants, a love she garnered as an agronomy major. Immediately following her cancer diagnosis in July, she was blessed to be able to meet and visit her newborn grandson Connor in Redondo Beach, CA.
Jane is survived by her husband Chen Ho, three daughters: Winnie Behrend (Robert), Sioux Falls; Frankie Chen (Grant Stahl), Sioux Falls; Judie Chen (Sanjay Singh), Redondo Beach, CA; six grandchildren: Alexandra, Christopher and Ethan Behrend; Sydney and Blaire Torgrude; and Connor Singh. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one sister.
A memorial service will be held at Heritage Funeral Home, 57th Street and Minnesota Ave. at 2 pm on Saturday, October 19, 2013. Family will be available to greet friends one hour prior to the service.
